Understanding cholesterol

The excessive concentration of cholesterol in the blood is the main reason to induce atherosclerosis, so many people consider cholesterol in food as the chief culprit of atherosclerosis. In fact not, cholesterol is the indispensable component of the body and  the cell membrane and the composition of nerve tissues can not be separated from it. Cholesterol is also important raw materials for physiologically active substances to synthesize bile acids, steroid hormones and vitamin D and other, and these substances in the body have important physiological functions. Cholesterol is also the composition of plasma lipoprotein, and can be combined with apolipoprotein to carry large amounts of triglyceride and cholesterol ester to transport in plasma.
Cholesterol in the body are mainly from in two ways, that is derived from endogenous cholesterol synthesized by the tissue cells and exogenous cholesterol mainly from animal food. Endogenous cholesterol is a major source of cholesterol for almost all tissues in the human body have the ability to synthesize cholesterol, in which the the liver is the most active site to synthesize cholesterol and the speed and number of synthesis is also the most. Exogenous cholesterol is only part of cholesterol in the body and is not the main source of cholesterol.
